Ellabelle Davis Birthday Tribute Concert and Reception

Ellabelle Davis, born in New Rochelle on March 17, 1907, was one of the first African- American women to perform in the world’s greatest concert halls. In 1946 she was voted “Most Outstanding Singer of the Year” by the American League of Composers. Touring throughout the world, the soprano was acclaimed by audiences abroad, in Mexico and South America, and in her hometown, where she continued to perform benefits concerts until her untimely death in 1960.  This concert will include songs sung by the soprano and excerpts from the opera, “the Gentle Lark of New Rochelle,” which was written by local historian Karen S. Allen. Following the concert there will be a reception and -signing of the new biography on Ellabelle Davis, which was also written by Ms. Allen. Ossie Davis Theater.
