With unbridled imagination, a handful of remarkable composers in the British Isles and on the Continent pushed the very limits of art, creativity and virtuosity. They were revolutionaries who quietly cultivated profound and unique points of view that stood far apart from the mainstream. It is said that such visionaries were ahead of their time, and this certainly rings true in Williams Lawes’ ingenious broken consort for harp, theorbo, violin and viol. Beautiful, brainy and sometimes shocking, this rare assemblage of instruments becomes increasingly virtuosic through an intricate labyrinth of variations known as ‘divisions.’ Marin Marais brings his refined elegance to the art of variation and Johann Schmelzer’s stunning pyrotechnics, set over a ground bass, transforms a simple melody into something otherworldly.
