Discussion of the 20th Century Russian Novel, The Master and Margarita

Melissa Frazier, Russian and Russian & Comparative Literature faculty member, will lead a discussion of the 20th century Russian novel, The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. “This rich and often very funny story of the devil’s visit to 1930’s Moscow rewards close reading as it is simultaneously a satire of the early Stalinist era, a fifth and final Gospel, and a retelling of Goethe’s Faust with the seeker of truth now not the scientist, but the artist.” The Burgin/O’Connor translation will be used (Vintage). Attendees are encouraged to read part one for the first meeting. This series is sponsored by The Friends of the Library. The event will take place in Marshall Field Building, Room 3 at Sarah Lawrence College.
