lluminating the Night:
Everything You Want to Know About Light Painting )
There’s no reason to fear the dark—especially when you can illuminate it!
Light painting is one of the more mysterious realms of night photography, but it also packs a lot of potential punch in terms of creative opportunity. In night photography you use light painting not to simply brighten objects in your scene; rather, you use it to sculpt a composition in a way that can’t be done in daylight, to “carve” compositional elements out of the darkness.
In this presentation, National Parks at Night’s Matt Hill will walk you step by step on the journey of learning how to paint with light. He’ll discuss the how and why of light painting, exposure, various tools, best-practice techniques, the three kinds of light, color temperature, angles of illumination, low-level landscape lighting and more. He will also do live demos illustrating all those points, so you can see first-hand how light painting works. Finally, they will examine case studies of light-painted photographs, dissecting how they approached and overcame the challenges of each.
You will leave this class with the knowledge and inspiration to illuminate the night!
Matt Hill is Co-Founder and Partner at National Parks At Night. His passion for the craft of, and teaching long-exposure night photograph spans nearly three decades.
