CREATIVE BOOK ART DISPLAY AT THE OSSINING PUBLIC LIBRARY
Artist, Shiela Hale of Katonah, is displaying her beautiful creation of book art at the library. The exhibition will be on display until the end of April on the second floor of the library.
The exhibit titled “Lost & Found” – Including Scholar’s Desk & Volumes from a Black Library.
“I am a lover of books, Shiela says. I read them, I make them, I alter them, and I build with them and for them. I was an early reader and I began reading to my children in their infancy. Books are my constant companions. I am comforted by their presence. I like to see them lined up on shelves and stacked in towers. I always have one in my handbag and one in my car.”
“Books, text and marks that we read as language have always had a strong presence in my artwork. I love and value books for their form and content. My first use of altered books was The Black Library, an ongoing work that begun in 2001.”
“The Scholar’s Desk is a scene of scholarly activity, momentarily interrupted. It appears that someone has been working diligently at the desk, researching, attempting to organize. Volumes have been gathered and opened. The surface of the desk is inscribed with passages from books. Like moths or butterflies, small book-like forms emerge from between the pages and through the covers of the books. The scholar and the “book moths” seem to be engaged in a common activity: retrieving lost knowledge and sending it out into the world.”
