Copland House…UNDERSCORED: Pierre Jalbert, Crossings

Music from Copland House continues its UNDERSCORED series of online programs, in collaboration with the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Commissioned, premiered, and recorded by Music from Copland House, Pierre Jalbert’s Crossings is inspired by the migration of people voyaging into new and unfamiliar places, and traces the Vermont-born composer’s French-Canadian-American ancestry. Built on a folk song from Quebec, Quand j’ai parti du Canada (“When I Left Canada”), Crossings deconstructs, reinterprets, reassembles, and reorders this striking, mournful tune in inventive and unexpected ways, weaving its own vibrant, illuminating musical journey. This program features a complete performance by Music from Copland House of this remarkable work, preceded by a brief introductory conversation with the composer, and followed by a live Q&A with viewers.

Featured Music from Copland House artists are Linda Chesis, flute; Derek Bermel, clarinet; Harumi Rhodes, violinist; Alexis Pia Gerlach, cellist; Michael Boriskin, pianist.
