Concert: “I’ve Got the Tune” — On Stage with Marc Blitzstein

Sunday, April 19, 2015
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The legendary German composer Kurt Weill set the standard for raw, politically-grounded anti-establishment musical theater works that inspired the too-little-known American creative genius Marc Blitzstein. Called by no less than Leonard Bernstein “the greatest master of the setting of the American language to music,” Blitzstein is best known for his definitive English translation of Brecht-Weill’s iconic Three-Penny Opera, but wrote such landmark music-theater works as The Cradle Will Rock, Juno, and Regina (on Lillian Hellman’s prize-winning play, The Little Foxes). On Sunday, April 19 at 3pm, I’ve Got the Tune (from the title of a Blitzstein song) traces Weill’s heyday as the toast of 1920s Berlin cabaret and 1930s migration to America to Blitzstein’s emergence on the Broadway stage, and explores the disparate roots and shared artistic values of these two highly-distinctive theatrical figures. Soprano Amy Burton and baritone William Sharp are featured.
