Concert: All About That Bass
The highly regarded bass singer Ross Crolius, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, and founder of the ensemble Songfellows, will join pianist Diane Guernsey in a concert that highlights the bass voice in its many glories and guises. Exploring such themes as “A Trip to Hades” and “Twentieth-Century British Gems,” Mr. Crolius and Ms. Guernsey will present great bass arias and songs from the baroque and through WWI and beyond. On the way, they’ll bring to life the colorful characters in which bass soloists (and their listeners) revel–Charon, the Underworld’s ferryman, and Vulcan, the powerful Roman god of the smithy–while spotlighting the rich, resonant sonorities of the true bass voice. Along the way, Mr. Crolius will offer brief comments explaining the songs’ characters and their doings, making for a highly rewarding and entertaining musical afternoon. Suggested donation: $2.00
