Clay Art Center presents

Lineage: The Art of Mentorship

(Counselor, Coach, Leader, Friend)

Clay Art Center is pleased to present Lineage: The Art of Mentorship, curated by artist and educator Gail Kendall, this exhibition will showcase 21artist-educators and their chosen “mentees,” exhibiting the importance and impact of the tutelage of the artists of our future.  Most artists, especially ceramic artists, can attribute their technical skills and personal artistic growth to the mentorship of an art educator. This exhibition visually explores that relationship through sculpture, installation and pottery and will run from September 27- November 15, 2014, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 27, from 6-8pm. Admission is free.  Gail Kendall and her chosen protégé for the exhibition Michael Strand, will also lead a workshop together Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19  from 10am – 4pm, entitled “A Weekend Pottery Workshop”  To register, visit www.clayartcenter.org.  The Shop at CAC will feature handmade works by founding Director and mentor Reena Kashyap, CAC Artists and invited guest artists. The Classroom Display will feature work by current CAC Instructors.

Featuring 43 contemporary ceramic artists, Lineage: The Art of Mentorship will highlight work by Artists from both in and out of academia as both have had a profound impact on our clay culture. Due to the skill driven nature of the media, ceramics has a long history of mentorship through apprenticeships and working in large, community studios.  Mentorship, while similar to teaching, is a closer relationship than that of the classic student/ teacher connection.  The protégé is more than a student; the mentor is more than a teacher.  Teaching does not end at the finish of a term but continues for years. Mentors experience value or, MUTUALITY, when they interact with their partners. The relationship demands boundary crossings, thus: counselor, coach, leader, and friend.

Selected Artists were chosen because of their mastery in the field of ceramics- not only in objects and ideas, but in the generation of other artists. Each artist in turn invited an artist with whom they feel this strong connection.  This decision was difficult for most as they have poured their energy into more than one protégé. Each considered which mentee had the strongest influence them and which is the most ideal representation of the energy expended in the art of mentorship.

The participating artists range from emerging to established in their careers, are listed in pairs of invited artist with their chosen protégé and include:   Wayne Higby with Lee Somers, Liz Quackenbush with Erin Furimsky,  Linda Arbuckle with Alyssa Wekch, Scott Chamberlin with Sarah White, Eddie Dominguez with  Nathan Murray, Brad Schweiger  with  Andrea Keys Connell, Linda Sikora with Sanam Emami, Jeff Oestreich with Charlie Maag, Mark Pharis with Sam Chung, Peter Beasecker with Brooks Oliver, Dan Anderson with  Joe Pintz, Silvie Granatelli with Elisa DeFeo, Mark Shapiro with Michael McCarthy, Julia Galloway with Sean O’Connell, Doug Casebeer with Seth Green, Alleghany Meadows with Steven Colby, Vince Patelka with TJ Edwards, Cynthia Bringle with Gertrude Graham Smith Smith, Richard Notkin with Tip Toland, Chris Gustin with Dan Molyneux and Michael Strand, chosen by Gail Kendall as her protégé.
