Description

Paul Cézanne: The Father of Modern Art (Online Course)

Although not widely appreciated until the last decade of his life, Paul Cézanne was the preeminent French artist of the Post-Impressionist era. Insisting that painting stay in touch with its material, virtually sculptural origins, he paved the way for the emergence of twentieth-century modernism, both visually and conceptually. His work constitutes the most powerful and essential link between the ephemeral aspects of Impressionism and the more materialist, artistic movements of Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism and complete Abstraction. His art also embraces the great art of the past in surprising ways. In this series, we’ll examine the context evolution, achievements and broad influence of this unique individual—as an artist and a man. Pablo Picasso believed Cézanne was “the father hovering over us” and Henri Matisse dubbed him “the father of us all”. Take this class to find out why!
