Challenging Coloniality in Travel Writing with Bani Amor via Zoom

Re-examine your approach to travel writing by identifying and challenging the coloniality embedded within the genre.

After centuries of exposure to travel literature written from a white, Western, and often cis-masculinist gaze, it’s near impossible for our writing to have not been influenced by these perspectives. As the genre was popularized by the onset of colonization by European expansionists, it can seem difficult to distinguish fresh ideas from stale ones, but it can also be liberating. In this workshop, we’ll trace this history within the genre as well as our interpersonal relationships to place in order to identify our unconscious biases and walk away with tools to approach travel writing with passion and realness.
