Author Talk & Book Signing with Robert Thorson

Robert “Thor ” Thorson, author of The Boatman: Henry David Thoreau’s River Years, a board member of the Thoreau Society, and Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut, speaks on Henry David Thoreau’s relationship to rivers. Thoreau became what today we would call a fluvial geomorphologist, an environmental scientist devoted to understanding the form and function of rivers. Thorson’s book offers the reader an in-depth account of Thoreau’s lifelong love of boats, his skill as a navigator, and his extensive survey of the Concord River in Massachusetts. The spirit of Thoreau the Transcendentalist is present in Rivers Flow / Artists Connect and Collection Spotlight: The Hudson River School, which features the art movement closely associated with his philosophy. The talk will feature simultaneous ASL interpretation and will be followed by a book signing.
