Art/Life Lecture with Tova Synder

International Artist to Discuss Murals on March 12 in Mamaroneck

Tova Snyder’s Works are Seen in Europe, Brazil, Westchester

MAMARONECK (February 16, 2017) – Learn the story of murals through the centuries as reflections of religions, political movements and more when international artist Tova Snyder discusses the art form and her personal journey becoming a muralist on March 12 at the Mamaroneck Public Library, 136 Prospect Ave., Mamaroneck.

The talk begins at 3 p.m. and is part of the Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council’s lecture series, a program of the Arts Live initiative bringing creative works and education about art to the public.

“Murals have always been a very powerful way to connect with the public,” said Ms. Snyder, who has created public artworks from Pigna, Italy to Port Chester. “Public art has a positive impact on the community. It is accessible to all and has a transformative effect on an open space where fine art is integrated into the fabric of an environment.”

She will also talk about the different techniques in creating the ancient art form, from fresco painting on wet plaster to the modern works created on parachute cloth that is then glued to a wall.

A versatile artist, Ms. Snyder has created works in Europe, Brazil and several Westchester communities. Her works touch a variety of places, not only in different countries, but in different cultures within those countries. Among the most notable locally are a 12-panel installation of faceted glass at the Harrison train station, and a 6-story mural that brightens a Bronx neighborhood off the Grand Concourse.

“We love murals, especially ones as vibrant as Ms. Snyder’s paintings, or the one created recently in our village by a local artist, Piero Manrique,” said Solange De Santis, Chair of the Arts Council. “But do you know what goes into creating such a large piece of art? Ms. Snyder, with her works celebrated here and abroad, is an ideal artist to talk about murals’ significance and to tell us everything you might not know about artworks that are created right in front of you.”

A one-time resident of Rye, Ms. Snyder now divides her time between the New York area, where she maintains a studio Port Chester, and her home and studio on the Italian Riviera. In 2005, the Westchester Arts Council honored Ms. Snyder with its Arts Award, which is given to people and groups whose “vision, commitment, and leadership have enriched the cultural life of Westchester, its communities and its citizens,” according to the organization’s website.

The Mamaroneck lecture series began last year. Speakers have included a professional Julliard-trained dancer, an artist who dresses zoo animal enclosures and a composer and sound editor for movies.
