Artist Talk for “Untamed” show at Chroma Fine Art Gallery

Artist Talk for “Untamed” – Saturday, May 6, 4p.m.

Visit show: April 18 – May 14

Chroma Fine Art Gallery presents “Untamed”, April 18, 2023 – May 14, 2023.

“Nature’s wild energy has swept into the gallery,” exclaims curator Rita Baunok of Chroma Fine Art Gallery in Katonah. Baunok is referring to her newest exhibition, “Untamed,” which is themed around horses, and on view from April 18 through May 14.

“Horses are such special animals, and they are so beloved in this area,” Baunok says. “I wanted to present an exhibition that celebrates their unique characteristics.” Four artists – Robert Anthony Spinazzola, Rachel White, Andrea Rowan, and Jen Badalamenti – were selected for their ability to present their equine subjects in an especially compelling way.
Robert Anthony Spinazzola is a sculptor who presents a series of muscular, metal impressions of horses. He welds together found objects, which result in pieces that contain unique and powerful individual qualities. “I use discarded mechanical artifacts because I find them singularly precious and beautiful,” Spinazzola explains.

While Rachel White is known for her powerful, large-scale depictions of horses in motion; but, for this exhibition at Chroma she has created a suite of small drawings. Tender and sweet, these personal portraits show horses in various states of grazing and lazing. One can’t help but smile while looking upon these intimate glimpses…

Born into and raised by an active equine family in Connecticut, it is no surprise that Andrea Rowan’s inspiration springs from her “horses, travels, adventures, and time in nature.” Baunok selected a sampling of Rowan’s horse paintings that are colorful, lyrical, and non-traditional. They provide a bold, abstracted exploration of the shape and structure of the equine figure that beautifully complements the other artists’ depictions.

Jen Badalamenti is a photographer who has exceptional observational skills, and horses are among her favorite subjects. She not only captures the majesty of the species, but the individual beauty of each animal. Though she works in film, Badalament often applies layers of encaustic (a melted wax medium) to works to add a characteristic depth and atmosphere. “The inspiration for my art comes from real life and emotional connections –a moment captured or a glimpse of a reflection.”
