Art/Life Lecture/Performance: “From the Harpsichord to the Piano”
The Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council presents:
“From the Harpsichord to the Piano, A Musical Journey”
For 300 years, the harpsichord was the dominant keyboard instrument of choice for composers of solo, chamber and orchestral music. A transformative evolution in the late 18th century resulted in the emergence of the more muscular piano, which eclipsed the harpsichord. How did this happen? Baroque specialist Eric Milnes traces the surprising musical, social and economic timeline that resulted in the near-extinction of the harpsichord in the 19th and 20th centuries, until its rediscovery and return to use in recent decades. Lecture/performance.
