“ART”: Katonah Classic Stage presents a live reading

Oak & Oil Gallery to Host Katonah Classic Stage

For A Benefit Reading of “Art,” by Yasmina Reza

Katonah, NY – Katonah Classic Stage (KCS), Westchester County’s new, professional theatre company dedicated to classic plays, will present Yasmina Reza’s comedy, “Art” on February 25th and 26th, at Oak & Oil Gallery in Katonah. The reading will feature Broadway, television, and film veterans Raymond Anthony Thomas, Jordan Lage, and KCS Artistic Director Trent Dawson.

Katonah’s Oak & Oil Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of fine art with appreciation for works by local artisans. KCS was founded as a nonprofit in late 2019, just before the breakout of Covid-19, and aims provide seasonal, professional productions of classic plays in Northern Westchester. This is the first time Oak & Oil Gallery and KCS are partnering up for an event that will ultimately merge visual and performing arts for all to enjoy. Oak & Oil owner, Maxine Ganer, states, “We would like to thank Katonah Classic Stage for the opportunity to host this great event. We are passionate about art and we believe that art and culture bring communities together, so we are thrilled and look forward to welcoming guests and performers to our gallery.”

The New York Times called “Art” a, “lacerating comedy [that} dissects the bonds among three friends when one mocks another for buying an expensive all-white contemporary painting, and the third is stuck in the uncomfortable middle. “Art” — the word itself is self-consciously in quotation marks in the title, though it is rarely rendered that way — won prestigious prizes in Paris and London, as well as the best play Tony Award on Broadway, and has enjoyed the kind of global success rare for a modern script. Let alone a French one. Let alone one by a woman.”

In choosing “Art”, KCS Executive Director Sharron Kearney said, “This seemed like the perfect play for this venue. Oak & Oil has been tremendously supportive of KCS and this play will likely generate a robust discussion about art and the valuable role it plays in all our lives.” In early December 2021, KCS kicked off their series of readings at the Bedford Historical House with a rousing rendition of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, with the cast, including Carolyn McCormickand Mark Linn-Baker, receiving a standing ovation. KCS plans to present one more reading at the end of March.

Tickets are available at www.katonahclassicstage.com/art. The reading is expected to run approximately 90 minutes, and for added safety, seating capacity is limited and attendees will have to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. There will be complimentary wine and light refreshments offered and a discussion with the performers will take place after the reading.
