An Evening with D. Nurkse, Sally Bliumis-Dunn, & Alison Jarvis


D. Nurkse is the author of ten collections of poetry, most recently Love in the Last Days: After Tristan and Iseult (Knopf, 2017) and A Night in Brooklyn (Knopf, 2012). He is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including those from the Guggenheim Foundation and the NEA. Nurkse has written on human rights and was elected to the board of Amnesty International-USA for a 2007-2010 term. His parents escaped Nazi Europe during World War II. He has taught poetry at Rikers Island Correctional Facility and currently teaches at Sarah Lawrence College.

Sally Bliumis-Dunn will read from her third book, Echolocation. She teaches Modern Poetry and Creative Writing at Manhattanville College, the Personal Essay at the 92nd Street Y and offers manuscript conferences at the Palm Beach Poetry Festival. She received her BA in Russian language and literature from U.C. Berkeley in 1983 and her MFA in Poetry from Sarah Lawrence College in 2002. Her poems have appeared in From the Fishouse, The New York Times, Nimrod, the Paris ReviewPBS NewsHour, Plume, Poetry London, Prairie Schooner, RATTLE, the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-day, Ted Kooser’s “American Life in Poetry, and Verse Daily. In 2002, she was a finalist for the Nimrod/Hardman Pablo Neruda Prize. Her first book, Talking Underwater was published by Wind Publications in 2007. In 2008, she was asked to read in the “Love Poems Program” at the Library of Congress. Her second book, Second Skin, was published by Wind Publications in 2010. Her chapbook, Galapagos Poems, was published by Kattywompus Press in 2016.

Alison Jarvis will read from Where is North (Silverfish Review Press, 2016), winner of the Gerald Cable First Book Award. She is a recipient of the Lyric Poetry Prize from the Poetry Society of America, the Mudfish Poetry Prize, the Guy Owen Prize from Southern Poetry Review, and a Fellowship from the MacDowell Colony.
