An Evening with D. Nurkse, Michael Waters, and Mihaela Moscaliuc (via Zoom)

D. Nurkse is the author of eleven poetry collections, most recently LOVE IN THE LAST DAYS: AFTER TRISTAN AND ISEULT, A NIGHT IN BROOKLYN, THE BORDER KINGDOM, BURNT ISLAND, and THE FALL, from Alfred Knopf. Knopf will publish his New and Selected Poems in 2022. He’s the recipient of a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim fellowship in poetry, two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships, the Whiting Writers Award, and prizes from The Poetry Foundation and the Tanne Foundation. He served as poet laureate of Brooklyn from 1996 to 2001. His work has been translated into French, Russian, Italian, Estonian, and other languages. Nurkse’s work has been reviewed in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Poetry, The Times Literary Supplement (UK), The Guardian (UK), Poetry London (UK), The Hudson Review, the Los Angeles Times, and other venues. His poems have been anthologized in six editions of the Best American Poetry series. Nurkse has also written on human rights and was elected to the board of Amnesty International-USA for a 2007-2010 term. He was a program officer for the Geneva-based NGO Defence for Children International from 1988 to 1992 and worked as a consultant for UNICEF. His study AT SPECIAL RISK: THE IMPACT OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE ON MINORS IN HAITI was commissioned by Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. Nurkse has taught poetry at Rikers Island Correctional Facility and in inner-city literacy programs, as well as at MFA programs at Rutgers, Brooklyn College, and Stonecoast. He’s currently a long-term member of the writing faculty at Sarah Lawrence College.

Michael Waters has published thirteen books of poetry, most recently Caw (BOA Editions, 2020), The Dean of Discipline (U Pittsburgh P, 2018) and Celestial Joyride (BOA Editions, 2016). Darling Vulgarity (BOA Editions, 2006) was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems (BOA Editions, 2001) was a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize. He has co-edited several anthologies, including Border Lines: Poems of Migration (Knopf, 2020), Reel Verse: Poems About the Movies (Knopf, 2019), Contemporary American Poetry (Houghton Mifflin, 2006), and Perfect in Their Art: Poems on Boxing from Homer to Ali (Southern Illinois UP, 2003). His poems have appeared in Poetry, American Poetry Review, Paris Review, Yale Review, Kenyon Review, The Progressive and Rolling Stone. A 2017 Guggenheim Fellow, he has been the recipient of five Pushcart Prizes, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Fulbright Foundation, and NJ State Council on the Arts, and residency fellowships from Yaddo, MacDowell, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, St. James Cavalier Centre (Malta), Tyrone Guthrie Centre (Ireland), and Chateau de Lavigny (Switzerland). Waters lives in Ocean, NJ.

Mihaela Moscaliuc is the author of the poetry collections Cemetery Ink (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2021),  Immigrant Model (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2015) and Father Dirt (Alice James Books, 2010), translator of Liliana Ursu’s Clay and Star (Etruscan Press, 2019) and Carmelia Leonte’s The Hiss of the Viper (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2015), editor of Insane Devotion: On the Writing of Gerald Stern (Trinity University Press, 2016), and co-editor (with Michael Waters) of Border Lines: Poems of Migration (Knopf, 2020). She has published scholarship in the field of Romani (Gypsy) Studies, on issues of representation, appropriation, exophony and code-switching, and on the works of Kimiko Hahn, Agha Shahid Ali, and Colum McCann. She is the Translation Editor for PlumeMoscaliuc has received two Glenna Luschei Awards from Prairie Schooner, residency fellowships from The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, MacDowell Colony, and Le Chateau de Lavigny (Switzerland), an Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and a Fulbright fellowship to Romania. She is associate professor of English at Monmouth University (New Jersey) and former poetry & translation mentor in the low-residency MFA program at Drew University (New Jersey).
