An Evening Concert for Flute, Cello, & Harpsichord

Experience the rich music of Baroque and Classical repertoire from such composers as J.S. Bach, C.P. E. Bach, Telemann, and Haydn on Friday, April 27 at 8pm at the Church of Immaculate Conception in Sleepy Hollow.

In this free evening concert, flutists David Markowitz and Holly Saks, cellist Adriana Maria Pera, and harpsichordist Jean Newton, will celebrate the great Baroque and Classical music and composers of the 1600s and 1700s, who continue to influence modern music, in a traditional format performance for today’s audience.

Jean Newton and Adriana Maria Pera are both members of the faculty at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, with Newton serving as the Executive Director of the community music school in White Plains. David Markowitz is an accomplished flutist and alumnus of the Music Conservatory of Westchester, having studied at the school with the late Harold Jones, then going on to study at Oberlin and Yale. Flutist Holly Saks brings her experience and expertise as a music educator and a multi-instrumentalist to the performance.

David Markowitz (flute) holds a B.A. in Music Theory and History from Oberlin College and a Master of Music in flute performance from Yale University where he studied with Ransom Wilson. His coaches have included Julius Baker, Michael Parloff, Joshua Smith and Bradley Garner.  Having studied jazz improvisation as well as theory at Oberlin, he published Tetrachords for Jazz in 2005. David got his start on flute at the Music Conservatory of Westchester where he studied with Harold Jones until high school graduation, winning local prizes and playing in the New York Youth Symphony. He has served on the faculty at Mansfield School of the Arts and Amadeus Conservatory, and also teaches privately in Westchester and Fairfield Counties.

Jean Newton (harpsichord) is Executive Director at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, a non-profit community music school located in White Plains. A professional harpsichordist who formerly had an active performing career, Ms. Newton is an experienced music educator and administrator. Prior to her appointment as Executive Director, she served as Dean of Students and Faculty, and as Director of Development, supervising completion of the school’s $7.8 million fundraising campaign to acquire and renovate its 36,000 square foot facility. As a member of the Conservatory faculty, Ms. Newton established the school’s Baroque Ensemble and has coached both students and faculty in the interpretation of 17th and 18th century repertoire. Ms. Newton currently serves on the boards of Arts Westchester and the Westchester County Arts Leadership Association. She has served on peer review panels for the United States Department of Education, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She holds a Master’s degree in harpsichord/early music performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, and a Ph.D. in English Literature from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York.

Adriana Maria Pera (cello) has a B.M. from University of Buffalo and a Master of Music from University of Toronto. She is a member of the ‘Scape Trio which performs chamber music influenced by the work of living visual artists.  Ms. Pera participated in the landmark performance of American Grain, produced by Torn Space Theater and taking place inside the largest grain elevator on the complex known as Silo City in Buffalo, NY.  She has been a cellist with the Slee Sinfonietta, Principal Cellist with the Symphony Orchestras of Toronto and Buffalo Universities, and a member of the Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra – a contemporary rock band.  Ms. Pera has participated in the International Bach Festival, directed by Maestro Helmuth Rilling, and in the “June in Buffalo” Series, an annual festival of contemporary music hosting notables such as Steve Reich.  She has taught at School of the Holy Child (Rye, NY), Rye Arts Center, and Jewish Community Center of Westchester.

Holly Saks (flute) Ed.D has been a music educator for over 15 years, teaching both privately and in schools. She teaches flute, piccolo and piano in private practice to all age groups throughout the Tri-State area and was a faculty member of The Ursuline School as director of their award winning symphony orchestra. In addition to being a teacher, Dr. Saks is an active freelance performer playing in various orchestras and small ensembles around the county such as the Manhattanville College Community Orchestra and the Sound Beach Community Band in Greenwich, CT.
