A Reading with Charles Baxter


Acclaimed fiction author Charles Baxter will be on campus for this year’s fiction residency, a component of the MFA Program. This event is sponsored by the MFA in Writing Program and the Elaine Oakley Behr Visiting Writers Fund.

 

Charles Baxter is the author of five novels, including The Soul Thief (2008) and The Feast of Love (2000), which was a finalist for the National Book Award and which was made into a film. He also has published four collections of stories, including Gryphon (2011) and Harmony of the World (1984), which won the Associated Writing Programs Award; several collections of essays on writing, including The Art of Subtext: Beyond Plot (2007), which won the 2008 Minnesota Book Award for General Nonfiction; and three collections of poems, including Imaginary Paintings (1989). He also has edited A William Maxwell Portrait (2004) and Best New American Voices (2001), among other anthologies. Baxter has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Michigan Council for the Arts, as well as numerous awards, including a literature award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A long-time member of the Department of English at the University of Michigan, Baxter now teaches at the University of Minnesota.
