A Politics of Drawing: Proposal for a Method of Transformation
A Politics of Drawing is a group exhibition of work by eight contemporary artists, engaging the social and political in unexpected, varied approaches to the medium of drawing. Phillip Glahn (Tyler School of Art) and John O’Connor (Sarah Lawrence College) collaborated to curate works that are at times outwardly political, but many that make subtler statements and subversions, as well. To put it simply, the curators and artists alike seem to be asking where the space is for politics in art, as well as for art in politics. The artworks here presented comment on these twin conundrums, transforming the audience’s notions of aestheticized political statements and politicized artworks or art-making. Artists include: Eve Aschheim, Aleksandar Duravcevic, Raha Raissnia, Mark Shetabi, Suzanne Treister, Sam Vernon, Judy Yang, and Bassem Yousri. The exhibit is located in the Barbara Walters Gallery in Heimbold Visual Arts Center at Sarah Lawrence College.
The Opening Reception will be held Wednesday, October 8, 5 – 7 p.m.
