7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
The presentation will start with a quick survey of the breadth of my documentary photography from 20 African countries made over a 35-year span and will include my philosophy, techniques, processing, exhibitions and publishing experience.
I will then discuss my transition from analog to digital photography and the evolution of my work, using unique digital processes to obtain colorful and luminous representation of the drama of contemporary life and experience in Africa. Most recently these works have evolved to mixed media collage using primarily fabrics and less frequently, decorated papers and acrylic paint. I draw inspiration from the myriad textures, patterns and suffusion of colors characteristic of African clothing.
Alfred Fayemi is a documentary photographer of the African continent, spanning Cairo to Johannesburg. His works have been published in newspapers, magazines and books. He is the author of three photography books: Balancing Acts: photographs from West Africa, Voices from Within: photographs of African children and Windows to the Soul: photographs celebrating African women.
