ArtsWestchester is pleased to present recent works by the finalists for the 2020 Lawrence Salley Award for Photography. The award was established in 2018 by ArtsWestchester, the African American Men of Westchester and the Salley family to celebrate the life and artistic achievements of Lawrence “Larry” C. Salley, an active member of the Westchester community. Larry lived and worked in Westchester County (White Plains) where he assumed the leadership roles of Deputy Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Planning and Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Transportation. In his spare time, he was a gifted photographer. The award is presented each year at ArtsWestchester’s annual Arts Award.

Photographers from across the Hudson Valley were nominated for the award, and for the first time, the finalists will be presented in an exhibition at ArtsWestchester. The nine photographers on view represent distinct creative voices, each expertly expressed through the camera’s lens. From pure abstraction, to stunning examples of photojournalism, from local landmarks, to subtle still lives, the photographs display a vibrant sense of life and the beauty of humanity’s shared experiences. The exhibiting artists embody the spirit that the Larry Salley strove to capture each and every time he held his camera.
