Mary Cassatt in France, Lecture
Susan will speak about Mary Cassatt’s struggles to balance family obligations and artistic ambition; her difficult relationship with Edgar Degas, and her fight to gain fame and fortune in a male-dominated business.
Susan will share her own history in working on her play, “Girl in a Blue Armchair” which portrays Mary’s struggle to be an artist in Paris in the late 1800’s. It portrays the influence of Mary’s family, especially her sister, Lydia and her mentor, Edgar Degas, on her life and art.
Images will be shown of Mary’s work, her various residences in Paris and Mesnil-Theribus, as well as photographs of present-day Cassatt family members.
