Staging Stillness: A Performing Art Workshop

In celebration of Women’s History Month, theater director and arts educator Liz Dahmen leads an immersive workshop that explores how performance can deepen engagement with visual art. Stage and photograph your own self-portraits in the galleries and assume the roles of both artist and subject, while blending performance, photography, and storytelling. The workshop culminates in a public sharing and projection of participants’ works and is inspired by Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills, on view in Everything Has a Story and Modern Women / Modern Vision: Photographs from the Bank of America Collection.

Liz Dahmen is a theater director and arts educator and the founding artistic director of The Hudson Valley Performing Arts Laboratory. Her directorial work has been presented at venues that include Legoland™ NY, Dixon Place, the Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, and the Dorsky Museum. Her forthcoming book, Performing Art: A Guide to Devising in Museums (2026), explores theater-making in museum settings. She holds a BFA in Acting from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MA in Educational Theater from NYU Steinhardt.
