Faces of Ossining is a unique art show at Bethany Arts Community celebrating the Ossining Community through original portraits of those who live and work here. The drawings, created by artist Jack Berkowitz, include store owners, seniors, children and their parents, teachers, community leaders, barbers, restaurant workers, politicians, librarians, artists, members of many different cultural communities, and more. The 50 original portraits depict the real people and rich culture of the very vibrant population of Ossining.  

Join us from November 6-18 at Bethany Arts Community to reflect, share, and celebrate the people who call Ossining home and make Ossining great.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
“I am figurative painter and graphic artist living and working in the Hudson Valley of New York. Born in New Jersey, I’ve lived in New York City and environs for most of my life. 

As an undergraduate I studied art at New York University, Hunter College and Ohio University. I have a post graduate degree from the Brighton College of Art in Brighton, England. My work has been shown in galleries in England, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Putnam County. 

After the birth of my two children, to help support my family, I gave up my studio and went to work in the publishing industry. I worked as an executive consultant at numerous magazines including: The Village Voice, the Nation Magazine, American Lawyer and New York Magazine. In 2010 I left publishing and began working in the studio again full time. 

Soon after retirement I became the primary cook at a soup kitchen in Brooklyn. Meeting and serving scores of people who have been marginalized—who may be hungry or houseless – gave me a sense of what life is like for so many people walking the streets of every city in America. Each and every one of them had a story to tell. 

Whether doing large format narrative paintings and portraits, I consider myself, first and foremost, a storyteller. However well we think we know someone we rarely know who they really are, and what they’ve experienced. As an artist I believe it’s my job to uncover what is opaque by telling their stories that speak to struggles, sadness, joy, compassion, and resiliency. 

I like to paint and draw series of people who make up a community. In the past I have created works profiling people at soup kitchens, living on the Bowery, street vendors in Mexico City, and survivors of wars in the Middle East. Whether friends, family members or people I have never met before, I find great joy learning what they do each day and how they view their own lives. 

This commission from Bethany Art Community has given me the opportunity to spend the last year meeting, photographing, and drawing the people of Ossining. There are nearly fifty works in this show, and my hope is that collectively they portray the robust and diverse flavor of this vibrant river town.”

Faces of Ossining es una muestra de arte única en Bethany Arts Community que celebra a la comunidad de Ossining a través de retratos originales de quienes viven y trabajan aquí. Los dibujos, creados por el artista Jack Berkowitz, incluyen dueños de tiendas, personas mayores, niños y sus padres, maestros, líderes comunitarios, barberos, trabajadores de restaurantes, políticos, bibliotecarios, artistas, miembros de muchas comunidades  culturales diferentes, y más. Los 50 retratos originales muestran a las personas reales y la rica cultura de la vibrante población de Ossining.

SOBRE EL ARTISTA: 

“Soy un pintor figurativo y artista gráfico que vive y trabaja en el Valle del Hudson, Nueva York. Nací en Nueva Jersey y he vivido en la ciudad de Nueva York y sus alrededores la mayor parte de mi vida.  

Como estudiante universitario, estudié arte en la Universidad de Nueva York (NYU), Hunter College y la Universidad de Ohio. Tengo un posgrado del Brighton College of Art en Brighton, Inglaterra. Mi trabajo se ha expuesto en galerías de Inglaterra, Manhattan, Brooklyn y el condado de Putnam.  

Después del nacimiento de mis dos hijos, para ayudar a sostener a mi familia, renuncié a mi estudio y trabajé en la industria editorial. Trabajé como consultor ejecutivo en varias revistas, incluyendo The Village Voice, The Nation Magazine, American Lawyer y New York Magazine. En 2010 dejé la industria editorial y volví a trabajar en el estudio a tiempo completo.  

Poco después de retirarme, me convertí en el cocinero principal en un comedor comunitario en Brooklyn. Conocer y servir a muchas personas marginadas — que pueden estar hambrientas o sin hogar — me dio una idea de cómo es la vida para tantas personas que caminan por las calles de todas las ciudades de Estados Unidos. Cada una de ellas tenía una historia que contar.  

Ya sea realizando pinturas narrativas de gran formato o retratos, me considero, ante todo, un narrador de historias. Por muy bien que creamos conocer a alguien, rara vez sabemos quién es realmente y qué ha vivido. Como artista, creo que mi trabajo es descubrir lo que está oculto, contando historias que hablan de luchas, tristeza, alegría, compasión y resiliencia.  

Me gusta pintar y dibujar series de personas que conforman una comunidad. En el pasado, he creado obras perfilando a personas en comedores comunitarios, personas que viven en Bowery, vendedores ambulantes en Ciudad de México y sobrevivientes de guerras en Medio Oriente. Ya sean amigos, familiares o personas que nunca he conocido antes, encuentro una gran alegría en aprender qué hacen cada día y cómo ven sus propias vidas.  

Este encargo de Bethany Arts Community me ha dado la oportunidad de pasar el último año conociendo, fotografiando y dibujando a la gente de Ossining. Hay cerca de cincuenta obras en esta muestra, y mi esperanza es que colectivamente retraten el sabor robusto y diverso de esta vibrante ciudad ribereña.”
