“Still/Life” at the Museum of Arts & Culture

“Still /Life” is a dual location exhibit taking place at both the NRCA Rotunda Gallery at City Hall and the Museum of Arts & Culture at NRHS. New Rochelle’s is the only high school in the state with its own museum, providing cross disciplinary opportunities for enrichment, and this show features works by 11 artists –   Lisa Archigian,  Mia Brownell,  Suzanne Butler Richardson,  Erika Hibbert,  Emmanuelle Loiselle,  Michael Manning,  Moira McCaul,  Kristen Osterberg,  Christian Salvati,  Scott Seaboldt and  Ben Quesnel —  that elevate ordinary objects into personal artifacts – some infused with memory and quiet magic, others assembled into bold and dramatic forms, but all giving the viewer a chance to see the everyday made strange, fresh and alive.

See “Still/Life” on exhibit now at the NRCA Hall Rotunda Gallery from 9 am to 5 pm, Mondays through Fridays. And for ArtsFest visit the MAC to see “Still/Life” on Saturday, October 18 from 11 am to 3 pm. The MAC exhibit features different works by the same 11 artists in an expanded format that allows the inclusion of large sculptural pieces.

As part of the MAC’s participation in ArtsFest the NRCA and ArtsWestchester have partnered with New Rochelle High School’s poetry club to bring Westchester County Poet Laureate Phylisha Villanueva to meet with the students. Phylisha Villanueva’s focus is “ephrastik” poetry (an ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a work of art that can amplify and expand its meaning)  and on September 16th she met with students from Olivia Thompson’s English classes and members of the NRHS Poetry Club to hear about her approach to art and draw inspiration for their own poems.

When the MAC opens to the public on October 18th Phylisha Villanueva will return to read her poem in a special program at 12:30 pm. She will be joined by Westchester’s Youth Poet Laureate Harmony Hopwood (a NRHS senior) and members of the NRHS Poetry Club who will also read their original poems written in response to the art on exhibit at the MAC.
