Yonkers: American World War II Heritage City
Untermyer Performing Arts Council is delighted to present Yonkers: World War II American Heritage City at Untermyer Park, 945 North Broadway, Yonkers.
At 6:10 pm, Mary Robison, Head Reference Librarian at Riverfront Library, will make a special presentation on the Yonkers Home News at 6:10 pm. The Yonkers Home News was a wartime newspaper produced by the Alexander Smith Memorial Fund for Yonkers servicemen and women serving in World War II. Featuring articles on political, social and sport events, thousands of copies were printed each week and sent to military bases around the world, all paid for ; the paper was designed to keep the twenty thousand Yonkers servicemen and women connected to their hometown. Well over than 25,000 Yonkers Civilians, men, women and children, volunteered for all duties needed, and did everything necessary to “bring our boys back home.”
This and other extraordinary efforts of Yonkers during the war earned our city the designation of New York State’s World War II American Heritage City, the only municipality in New York State to hold this coveted title.
At 6:30 pm, Swingadelic with the Swing Dollz will perform exciting music from the 1940s, music Yonkers loved during World War II, music Yonkers danced to at the USO or listened to on their home radios. Swingadelic will deliver this music from the Yonkers Homefront during the war.
This is our tribute to the men, women and children who devoted their lives to winning World War II, celebrating their sacrifices and lives on the Homefront with a special World War II Concert performed by the acclaimed Swingadelic with the Swing Dollz, their special guests!
