Artist’s Statement:

Art has been a lifelong passion of mine. I took private art lessons in Colombia until I moved to the United States in my late twenties and continued my art education in Southern California for many years. In my youth, I was captivated by da Vinci’s masterful techniques and the groundbreaking creativity of Picasso and I also admired renowned Colombian artists like Botero and Tejada.

I have experimented with various artistic mediums, yet I had never worked with pen and ink before. While attending a guitar-making class in Southern California, I learned to craft every component by hand—from selecting the wood for the body and neck to designing the inlays and rosette. This process became one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. However, one final, crucial detail remained: a signature or mark had to be placed inside the guitar that would be visible through the opening. This necessity sparked the creation of this series of drawings.

About the Artist:

Teresa Wight, a native of Colombia, spent much of her adult life enjoying the warmth of Southern California. In 2014, her youngest daughter coaxed her out of retirement and invited her to live in Westchester to be near her youngest grandchildren. Meanwhile, her eldest daughter, along with two older grandchildren and her great-grandson, remain in Southern California. Teresa treasures her extended visits to see her daughter in California and her sister in Colombia, and she has a wanderlust for European adventures. Yet, her heart is now truly at home in the ever-changing, enchanting beauty of New York’s seasons. She is an active member of the New York Botanical Garden, never missing a special exhibition. She also delights in taking the train into New York City, where she savors the architectural and cultural marvels that the metropolis has to offer. She is thrilled to be exhibiting at the Harrison Public Library—a place dear to her heart for its role in her grandchildren’s early childhood and its ongoing support of the arts.
