Radius Gallery, the exhibition space at Arc Stages in Pleasantville, New York, opens its 2024/25 season with new work by emerging artist Mary Cara Bates. The exhibit runs from November 17, 2024, through February 28, 2025. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, November 17, between 1 pm and 4 pm.

Bates is a mixed-media artist who creates collages by rearranging cut pieces of her abstract drawings and watercolor paintings into richly layered new works on paper. Inspired by the grid patterns and flow of activity in cities, her work reconciles competing rhythms, textures, and vivid color into a harmonious whole.

The Harborwalk series was created in response to a recent trip Bates took to Boston’s Seaport District, a former industrial area on the Boston Harbor that has transformed into a center for innovation and bold architecture. From the harbor-facing cantilever of the Institute of Contemporary Art and at points along the Harborwalk promenade, Bates studied the liquid distortions of the building lines refracting on the harbor’s undulating surface. Like the transitory abstract reflections on water, her memories of visiting the Seaport became fractured by distance and time. The collages in the Harborwalk series are constructed from reassembled drawings that represent the fragmented aspect of memory of place.
