Screening: Attica

|

The Capa Space is proud to present a free screening of Attica, a documentary film by Stanley Nelson. Presented in conjunction with our exhibition American Moments: John Shearer, Attica recounts the 1971 uprising at the Attica Correctional Facility, a violent five-day standoff, when inmates took control of the prison to demand better living conditions. The film documents events through interviews with survivors, observers, and governmental officials, and through archival material.

The uprising gripped the nation and was documented by hundreds of journalists. Shearer, who leveraged his unique perspective as a Black photojournalist to document the civil rights movement and brought nuance and humanity to charged issues of race and poverty, was initially the only photographer invited inside the correctional facility by the inmates. American Moments includes his photographs from Attica.

Reservations required and space is limited. RSVP to [email protected].
