This month Alissa Leigh, of Bedford, NY has the spotlight at Chroma Fine Arts Gallery. With a solo show titled, “Wild and Free,” Alissa’s newest paintings are on display. “This recent work is a bit of a departure for her – really it’s an evolution,” says curator Rita Baunok.
Alissa grew up in South Salem and has been a consistent and longtime participant in the region’s cultural scene. As a self-taught artist, she retains a fresh, uninhibited attitude and a commitment to experimentation in both technique and material. Her paintings range from moody monochrome to exuberantly bright, and feature a variety of texture, pattern, gesture, surface treatment, and rhythm. In some cases, Alissa will include legible words in her compositions; other times swooping oval loops, ladder-like grid marks, crosses, zigzags, calligraphic circles, and other symbols reflect the makings of a larger visual language. The result is appealing, surprising and uplifting. “Alissa is so talented; she brings such great energy to the gallery!”
