Reading, Writing, and Revising for Poetry Submissions with Michael Collins (via Zoom)
We will work to demystify (and perhaps even enjoy) the submissions process by working with tangible reading strategies to help identify good homes for poems and package them according to written and unwritten guidelines. Along the way, this will also be a learning community within which to discuss the psychological oddities of submissions: what drives us to send them (or not send them), how we each manage the peaks and valleys, and, perhaps most valuable of all, how the submissions process can help us in revising our work.
NB: This is a six-week class and will be taught on Zoom. It will be capped at 12 students. The link will be sent to the email you use to register and the day before the class begins. Please make sure to check your spam folder if you don’t get the email receipt with link as soon as you register. Please make sure to read our course policies page regarding workshop conduct and logistics before registering for any class at HVWC. No class on Thanksgiving!
Michael Collins’ poems have received Pushcart Prize nominations and appeared in more than 70 journals and magazines. He is also the author of the chapbooks How to Sing when People Cut off your Head and Leave it Floating in the Water and Harbor Mandala, the full-length collections Psalmandala and Appearances, which was named one of the best indie poetry collections of 2017 by Kirkus Reviews. He teaches creative and expository writing at New York University and the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center.
