Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1967, an African-American police detective from Philadelphia (Sidney Poitier) is suspected of a murder while passing through a small Mississippi town and after being cleared is asked by the bigoted sheriff (Rod Steiger) for his help in solving the case.
