How to Write Sex Scenes with Christina Chiu via Zoom

Sex is notoriously difficult to write about, and so easy to get terribly, terribly wrong. So much so that the Literary Review created an annual Bad Sex in Fiction Award, which, incidentally, has even gone to literary greats such as Tom Wolfe, Norman Mailer, and John Updike. So, then, how do we write sex well? How do we avoid writing sappy, metaphorical sex? Can a scene be too graphic? We will do exercises and discuss how to write with a sure and unapologetic hand. We will go over specific scenes in your work, and discuss character, theme, and other relevant issues that may shift the balance one way or other.

Christina Chiu is the winner of the James Alan McPherson Award for her novel Beauty, which was named a Kirkus Best Book of 2020. She is also author of Troublemaker and Other Saints, a nominee for the Stephen Crane First Fiction Award and winner of the Asian American Literary Award. Chiu has published in Tin HouseThe New Guard, Washington Square, The MacGuffin, Charlie Chan is Dead 2Not the Only OneWashington Square, and has won literary prizes from Playboy, New Stone Circle, El Dorado Writers’ Guild, and World Wide Writers.
Chiu hosts the virtual Let’s Talk Books Author Series and curates and co-hosts the Pen Parentis Literary Salon in New York City. She is a founding member of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. She received her MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. Chiu is a shoe designer.
