The Color of the Moon: Lunar Painting in American Art—An Exhibition at the HRM

The Hudson River Museum presents a stunning exhibition devoted to the allure of the moon for American painters, whose art has reflected the eternal fascination with our closest celestial body. It is the first major museum examination of the moon as it relates to the story of the American Nocturne as it developed from the early 1810s through the late 1960s.

The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission with works from museums and private collections across the United States. Artists include: Susie M. Barstow, Albert Bierstadt, Ralph Blakelock, Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Cole, Joseph Cornell, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Arthur Dove, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, George Inness, Roy Lichtenstein, Norman Rockwell, Edward Steichen, Jamie Wyeth, and Marguerite Zorach.

Co-curated by Laura Vookles, Chair of the Curatorial Department, Hudson River Museum, and Bartholomew F. Bland, Executive Director of the Lehman College Art Gallery, City University of New York.
