A desperate mother attempts to clear her son, charged with the horrific murder of a young woman, by finding the real killer. This riveting demonstration of how far a mother would go to shield her only offspring from harm slowly makes its way into the viewer’s consciousness as a Darwinian study of motherhood itself, of the strange, powerful combination of love and fierce protectiveness always at work to ensure the survival of the species. That a mother’s contribution to the species may not be worth protecting becomes a luridly relevant issue in this frightening thriller, exquisitely directed by Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder; The Host; Snowpiercer). If Hitchcock were alive and well and living in Korea he might make a film that looks a lot like this one. (NOTE: This Mother is not to be confused with either Pudovkin’s silent 1926 Russian film or Darren Aronofsky’s 2017 American film.)
