A new mother struggles to overcome the inexplicable suicide of her handsome young husband. After several years, she leaves the city and begins a new life with a kind man who loves her and her son. Yet at the heart of her new happiness a dark mystery remains. In 1995, Maborosi launched the brilliant feature film career of Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu (Still Walking; Like Father, Like Son), previously a documentarian. Almost immediately Koreeda was recognized as a master filmmaker whose works were marked by haunting themes and a striking visual style. Roger Ebert called Maborosi “a Japanese film of astonishing beauty”; the New York Times described it as “exquisitely beautiful…a pictorial tone poem of astonishing visual intensity and emotional depth.”
