Beyond the I: When Memoir Meets History with Mimi Schwartz

Through readings and in-class prompts, participants will explore ways to enrich personal stories by weaving in history—be it family legacies, neighborhood landmarks, or the social history that shapes us. The worry—but my life isn’t interesting—disappears when writers put “I” in the world “I” lives in.” Mimi Schwartz’s latest book is When History Is Personal (University of Nebraska Press, March 2018). Other books include the award-winning Good Neighbors, Bad Times; and Writing True, the Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction. She is Professor Emerita in Writing at Stockton University and gives talks and workshops nationwide and abroad.
