‘PRE-COLUMBIAN MEXICAN POTTERY” SUMI-INK PAINTINGS BY JIM MACIEL

Harrison Council for the Arts presents “Pre-Columbian Mexican Pottery” sumi ink painting by Jim Maciel at the Harrison Public Library, Halperin Building, 2 Bruce Avenue, Harrison, NY on view October 1-28.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT :  My art history goes back to 1966 when I started trying to learn art in a small college in New Bedford, MA.  In 1975 I moved to NYC as a VISTA volunteer. The city gave me the courage and inspiration to start showing my work.  I was a member of the Ward-Nasse gallery from 1980-84.  When I moved to Westchester County in 1978, I started showing in local spaces – Hastings Gallery, Hudson River Museum and the Bronxville, Larchmont, Irvington and Harrison Libraries. I’m also a proud member of the Mamaroneck Artist Guild.

My process is working from photos that I’ve taken on my travels.  These paintings were inspired by a visit to the Anthropological Museum in Mexico City.  I work on watercolor paper with brushes, and sumi ink (used for Japanese calligraphy).  I do a detailed drawing first then paint from light to dark.  My influence for this process is painter Chiura Obata who painted sumi ink pictures throughout the Yosemite Valley.

The exhibit may be viewed Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30am to 9:00pm; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 9:30am to 5:30pm and Sundays 1:00 to 5:00pm.  For info call the Library at 914/835-0324 or see www.harrisonpl.org.
