Voyage des Couleurs

Melanie Simard – Solo Exhibition

May 13 – June 3rd, 2017
Opening reception: Saturday, May 13th from 6-8pm

Mahlstedt Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition, Voyage des Couleurs, featuring works by Canadian artist, Melanie Simard from Montreal.

Since the earliest study on color theory from the poet, artist and politician, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1810, the artists’ journey and exploration of color have long been documented in art history. Colors are an essential part of how we experience the world, with their ability to express, and evoke various moods and emotions. This exhibition examines the journey by the artist to portray complex feelings, and elicit emotions in the audience.

The selected artworks depict various interpretations of emotions through color on scratched and skinned raw materials. As evident in Simard’s abstract painting, Regard Estival, the piece conveys uplifting emotions felt by the artist as summer approaches, utilizing a predominantly green and yellow palette with splashes of warm colors, in red and orange.
