Dance For Parkinson’s Disease
The Rye Arts Center is committed to making the arts accessible to those with varying abilities and backgrounds. These specialized classes stimulate mind, body and emotion in an enjoyable and safe environment. They offer participants the opportunity to learn from professionally trained dancers about stretching and strengthening muscles, with an emphasis on enhancing physical awareness and grace through modern, ballet and folk dance forms.
Dance for Parkinson’s was launched in June 2011 and replicates the Mark Morris Dance Company’s award-winning Dance for PD® program. Dance instructors at The Rye Arts Center are specially-trained through The Mark Morris Dance Company in Brooklyn. Feedback and attendance from this class has shown that people no longer feel classified as patients, but as dance students and are empowered to take charge of their own well-being. They feel more fluid, confident and graceful in their movements using modern, ballet and folk dance forms.

Recent rave about our Dance for Parkinson’s program:” Today my Mom attended her first Dance for PD class at your center. She loved it and was so happy when we spoke about the class. She said it was a bright shining moment to what has been a dark time. She also physically felt great after the class.
As a child, my mom lived in England and was Junior World Ballroom Champion. Later in life she taught ballroom, ballet and choreographed local musicals. I am so very grateful for this lovely program and the joy it has brought my mom. ”
