Open Classroom: Jazz Performance and Lecture
Come hear Charlie Arbelaez perform with a Purchase Conservatory jazz combo and discuss his experiences playing the saxophone for the United States Marine Corps. Learn about the history of music in the military and what the Marines are doing today with music. Arbelaez was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up near Fort Lauderdale, FL, playing the alto saxophone from age 11. In 2010, he enlisted as a saxophonist in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego, CA, where he furthered his musical career by participating in the local jazz scene during and after his active duty years. Called an “explosive bebop saxophonist” by the San Diego Reader, among other glowing reviews, Arbelaez released an eponymous album in 2015. He is now studying in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College with the support of the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
