Sarah Lawrence College Economics Lecture Series with Xiaodan Zhang: Sweatshops and Beyond
Xiaodan Zhang of York College will give a lecture entitled Sweatshops and Beyond: Chinese Labor Politics in the Reform Era.
The market reform has turned China into an economic behemoth in the last thirty-eight years, to which cheap labor made indelible contribution. What are the human cost behind all those “Made in China” labels flying all over the world? What are the dynamic interactions among the State, trade unions, business management, and workers that produce unique labor politics? Is there a powerful working class in formation? This talk will discuss these questions while teasing out paradoxical behaviors and conflicting ideas in relation to the above-mentioned players.
