Ranked the fifth greatest song of the 20th century, it’s no wonder an entire generation is able to recite almost every word of the 8 minute 33 second song, the meaning of which has been debated for decades. “American Pie” is one of 300 songs Don McLean has written including the also incredibly popular “Vincent” (Starry starry night), making him one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of his generation, comparable only to Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell.
