One Day Intensive The Sentence with B.K. Fischer

“Sentences are made wonderfully one at a time,” said Gertrude Stein. This four-hour workshop will celebrate and explore the sentence as a fundamental and flexible unit of composition for poems, stories, and essays, and is open to writers in any genre. Through exercises, adorations, and conversations, we will examine the sentence as an erotic and mnemonic gesture, as a map of psychic and ecological space, as a field of sensation and cognition. Along the way, participants will make sentences in shapes that give rise to new creative work. We’ll talk technique and inspiration in equal measure, moving beyond subject and predicate to show how syntax is structured with hinges, fulcrums, and levers. Rusty on grammar? Stumble over long sentences? Dangle your modifiers? You won’t anymore. We’ll find touchstones in Virginia Woolf, Junot Díaz, Elena Ferrante, Friedrich Nietzsche, Claudia Rankine, Ross Gay, Giorgio Agamben, Maggie Nelson, and others, but the focus will be on your own unfolding line
