Curator-Led Tour of “Woven Wonders: Picasso’s Kykuit Tapestries”
Kykuit curatorial staff will lead a one-hour guided tour of Woven Wonders: Kykuit’s Picasso Tapestries, offering a glimpse behind the scenes of the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center gallery’s latest exhibition.
Woven Wonders showcases a selection of monumental tapestries based on paintings by Pablo Picasso and handwoven with his approval by Jacqueline de la Baume Dürrbach between 1955 and 1975. The exhibition explores the origins and painstaking artistry behind this unique commission for Nelson Rockefeller and the extraordinary collaboration between artists, curators, and collectors.
De la Baume Dürrbach was among the few French weavers to combine the medieval tapestry tradition with 20th-century abstract art, and Picasso entrusted her with the unique challenge of translating his brushstrokes into woven yarn. Over the course of the tour, London will trace the origins of this singular commission and tell the story of de la Baume Dürrbach’s 20-year journey weaving Picasso’s paintings into wool and silk.
Collections and Curatorial Projects Assistant Elizabeth Marriot leads the June tour, part of Upstate Art Weekend, an annual event celebrating the cultural vibrancy of upstate New York through events and open exhibitions. Curator Katrina London leads the August tour.
Guests may arrive 45 minutes prior to the event start time to enjoy the new Sculpture Walk outside the DR Center. Please note that events will begin promptly at their scheduled start time. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of staff.
