Marsha on the Move: UnCharitable

Business Council of Westchester President Marsha Gordon does more than bestow valuable resources and advice to local businesses. On her free time, she loves catching the newest movies. In this ArtsNews column, she gives her thoughts on her newest watches. In this special addition, we rounded up Marsha’s reactions to many of the Best Picture nominees, for both Drama and Comedy, up Golden Globes this weekend. The views in this column are that of the author’s and don’t directly reflect opinions held by ArtsWestchester or ArtsNews.

UnCharitable is one of those films that aims to change the way we view the accepted models of our world. In this case, the film looks specifically at how the economic foundation of nonprofit operation and charitable giving must evolve to realistically meet the requirements of the organizations that serve people… the not-for-profit sector. The movie urges professionalism, investment in people and operations, and measuring success by impact.

As someone who is a bit of a “not-for-profit nerd”(my doctoral dissertation was on NFP governance), and also someone whose career has been in this sector, the premise of needed change rings true.

I am very proud that the organization I am privileged to lead has a Board that has not only embraced our 150-plus nonprofit members for 20-plus years as economic generators, but also believes our own organization should be entrepreneurial, and re-invest in new ways. Seeing this film is a motivation to continue growing in new ways and to encourage the community to support this sector’s next-level growth.

Thank you also to Laura Rossi, Executive Director of NY Community Trust, Westchester Division for bringing this film to Westchester and to Jill Singer of Jill Singer Graphics for sponsoring a two-week-long virtual screening of the film with the link and code below through April 15.
