Under the baton of Music Director Frank Nemhauser, and Associate Music Director David Baranowski, Westchester Choral Society has successfully sung its way through the Spring season. Frank had selected the melodious and romantic L’Allegro, il Penseroso, ed il Moderato by Handel, well-fitting and uplifting music during this time of the pandemic.

During April, the choir sang favorites from the choral canon.

Frank also allowed time for members to socialize, since the group missed the camaraderie, the personal contact they shared when singing in person. It offered members a chance to catch up with one another, to chat, to schmooze, and to laugh a bit.

On the last Tuesday of each month Frank lectured on topics of interest such as solfege, rhythm, intervals revealed, Handel’s use of “word painting”, information on the composer of the moment, and music theory. All was well received and appreciated. Both Frank and David brought knowledge, enthusiasm and much needed humor to the rehearsals.

While virtual rehearsals have not provided the same enjoyment and satisfaction as singing in person, many members participated. Most found it important to remain at least musically engaged. In addition, it provided an escape from the dreary and isolating time the Coronavirus imposed on everyone.

We are looking ahead with hope. Even though as more people become vaccinated and health experts offer optimistic visions of the months ahead, one has to plan for the future of choral singing with caution. We are aware of the continued risk and the health and safety of our members is of utmost importance to us.

Frank suggested organizing an outdoor singing event this summer for members who want to get together to sing in person. The event would take place in June or July. Currently we are exploring a suitable venue. No other summer events are planned at this time.

Frank Nemhauser also serves as music director for the Berkshire Choral International and is both director of vocal studies and associate professor at Mannes College of Music in New York.

David Baranowski is also music director of the Hudson Chorale.

About Westchester Choral Society

The award-winning Westchester Choral Society was founded by Sarah Stewart Bowne in 1942 to perform Bach’s B minor Mass with 15 singers. Today we are 55 singers performing works from Baroque to contemporary, presenting three concerts per season as well as Summer Sings and other musical events. Smaller ensembles are available for private and community performances. We welcome singers in all voice ranges to join us at a rehearsal before auditioning.
