Sarah Lawrence College to hold Women’s History Conference

February 21, 2019, Yonkers, NY – Sarah Lawrence College, home to the nation’s first graduate program in women’s history, will host its 21st Annual Women’s History Conference on March 1-2, featuring speakers who will discuss gender-based violence in the U.S. and across the globe.

In the age of social movements like #MeToo and #SayHerName, the use of violence to oppress women has been spotlighted from the arrest of Harvey Weinstein to the conviction of Bill Cosby and accusations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh during Supreme Court nomination hearings.

This year’s conference, Intersectional Activism in the Age of Gender Based Violence and Authoritarian Oppression, will look at the confluence of these acts of violence and their ties to oppression not only in the U.S. but across the globe.

The conference will kick off Friday night March 1 with keynote speaker Karen Cheeks- Lomax, CEO of My Sister’s Place, which provides services to women caught up in the web of domestic violence and advocates for an end to domestic violence and human trafficking through comprehensive services and education.

In addition to the keynote speaker, the conference’s open will include remarks by Mary Dillard, Director of the College’s Graduate Program in Women’s History, and presentation of the Gerda Lerner Award, an endowed fund that provides financial aid to graduate students in Women’s History. The fund is named for Gerda Lerner, who in 1972 established the Sarah Lawrence College Master of Arts Program in Women’s History, the country’s first graduate degree program in women’s history.

The conference will also feature panel discussions on Saturday, March 2 including:

  • #MeToo/TIME’s UP Movement, Accountability, Leadership, and Space;
